Being selected by Alberta Education, and now the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), as the one jurisdiction in Canada to participate in a downlink with the International Space Station in September 2009 is indeed a proud moment for Palliser Regional Schools. I would like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of the Palliser Technology Team, working in conjunction with teachers to enhance student learning via videoconferencing. We are extremely excited to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students, and the professional development that will be provided to Palliser teachers by CSA will serve teachers and students well into the future in their studies of space and space travel.

Palliser Regional Schools is being considered by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and Alberta Education to Video Conference with Robert Thirsk, Canada's next astronaut, when he launches into space to join the International Space Station.

CSA and Alberta Ed dignitaries will be in Vulcan, appropriately chosen to host the momentous occasion, this Thursday and Friday to determine the suitability of the location to communicate with Thirsk. "When I come to Vulcan, it's not only to take a look at the environment and make sure we have the right technology and the right team in place to make this happen, but also to engage students and the community before the actual event," Marilyn Steinberg, Program Manager for CSA, told the Vulcan Advocate in a phone interview last week.

If selected, Palliser students will be asked to submit questions to ask Astronaut Thirsk, and 16 lucky students, along with 16 Palliser teachers will get the chance to do so in September.

Check back on Thursday for details on how to be part of the announcement festivities on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon.
