Don Zech
Trustee - Chairperson, Ward 1 - Subdivision 3
Biography
Retired from active education in June of 2000 after 34 years of teaching, 32 of which have been in an administrative capacity. He holds graduate degrees in administration, special education, and curriculum. He has been honored by the Council on School Administration as the System Administrator of the Year in 1999, and has a Service Key from Phi delta Kappa, the highest honor that can be given by that organization. He has been providing workshops for teachers since 1975 as a Professional Development Consultant for the ATA, as a Performance Learning Systems (New Jersey) instructor and as an Association Instructor for the ATA. Don has served as Teachers' Convention president 3 terms, two in Medicine Hat and one in Lethbridge. Don has been involved in Hutterite colony education since 1977 and has been honored by the Colony Educators for Meritorious Service. He has also co-chaired the Hutterite Colony Teachers' conference previously and has worked on the International Conference of Hutterian Educators since its inception. Don has been a teacher and administrator at all levels-elementary, junior and senior high schools-and has worked as a Language Arts Consultant, a Deputy Superintendent and as a principal of Alternative Programs. His last active project was establishing an Outreach school in Coaldale, Alberta in 1997 for 4 students. When he retired, the school had a population of 185 students, most of whom had fallen through the cracks of the system previously. The past two summers have been spent in Africa, in Ghana, working with secondary school administrators to improve their school. As a trustee, Don believes the role to be one of providing the best education for all students while representing students and parents within the framework established for public schools by Alberta Education. The trustee's role is to allow administrators and teachers to fulfil their professional roles as efficiently as possible.
