Classes to resume as usual Tuesday

A small fire on the second floor of Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale prompted a brief evacuation of the building.

Smoke was noticed around 1:30 p.m., the fire alarm was pulled and students evacuated the building quickly. No one was injured

Principal Harry Fritschy said the evacuation took between 60 and 90 seconds, and all went smoothly, thanks perhaps to a fire drill that occurred Friday.

Students and staff were allowed to return to the first floor of the building shortly after 2 p.m. and by about 2:25 p.m., students were working again in classrooms and in the gym on the first floor.

Damage was contained to a second-floor washroom and the level was being aired out in the afternoon. Coaldale and District Emergency Services peronnel tested air quality and it’s expected classes will resume as usual on both floors of the school Tuesday, Fritschy said.

Thank you to Coaldale fire department for the quick response and support and to all the students and staff for promptly leaving the building in an orderly fashion.
