Board delays decision on byelection until after the summer break

The Board of Trustees of Palliser Regional Schools held a special board meeting Friday to accept the resignation of Joan Boras, the trustee for Ward 1, Subdivision 4.

Boras was first elected to the board on Oct. 21, 2013 representing the County of Lethbridge area surrounding and including the communities of Picture Butte and Iron Springs. She was also the board’s representative to Calgary Christian School in Calgary.

Although Boras was a new trustee, she had a long history in Palliser and in public education having spent 36 years as a teacher in the division.

Board Chair Colleen Deitz thanked Boras for her commitment to public education, her support of students and her passion for the teaching profession.

Although Boras’s letter of resignation was dated June 26, 2014, School Act Section 250(1) states the trustee “ceases to hold office at the meeting of the board at which the trustee’s resignation is submitted,” prompting the special meeting.

The resignation leaves the Palliser board with five trustees. The board has a choice whether to fill the vacancy by holding a byelection. School Act Section 251(1) states a byelection need not be held if there is only one vacancy and the vacancy occurs in the two-year period immediately following a general election. Deitz said the board would consider its next steps after the summer break.

The Board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Aug. 26 in Lethbridge.
