AP 435 - School-Based Support Staff Hiring

Palliser Regional Schools hires highly qualified and vibrant personnel who will support the Superintendent in meeting the diverse learning needs of all children and students.  This is achieved through recruiting, retaining and developing support staff as well as maintaining enriched employee relations.  

Procedures

  1. The office of the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) and school principal must be involved in all school-based hiring. Any exceptions to this procedure must be approved by the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources). The Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) may involve other division personnel as required in the hiring of school-based support staff.
  2. The hiring process will occur through the office of the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources). The Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) will collaborate with the Associate Superintendent (Learning Services) regarding the hiring, transfer and staffing levels of non-certificated staff for Learning Services positions.
  3. The Associate Superintendent (Learning Services) based on the approved budget, will determine the staffing levels for school-based support staff related to the core Learning Service function, including family school liaison program staff, learning assistants and career and academic counsellors.
  4. Following the established need for school-based support staff hiring, the procedure will be as follows:
    1. The position will be advertised as determined by the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources).
    2. The office of the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) will establish a process to determine a shortlist for the position.
    3. The principal will be notified of the shortlist and interview schedule that will be determined by the office of the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources). The principal and the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) will determine a mutually agreed upon date for interviews.
    4. The interview process will establish a suitable candidate and the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources) or designate will offer the position to the successful candidate, as well as contact those not selected.
    5. All documentation from interviews will be returned to and maintained by the office of the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources).
    6. The principal of the school will be notified of acceptance by the successful candidate for the position and will prepare appropriately for their start date.
    7. Salary and benefits will be determined by the Associate Superintendent (Human Resources).
