Policy Statement:
The Board will approve a division school-year calendar on an annual basis. In so doing, the Board will ensure the school year is set to reflect the educational interests of children and will incorporate both system and school site requirements into the calendar.

Board Action:

  1. The Board will set the calendar for the forthcoming school year at the January meeting of the Board or earlier. The school-year calendar will be set in keeping with the mandated time requirements set out in The Guide to Education (ECS-12)
  2. Parameters for the school year will, wherever possible, include the following:
    1. A two (2) week break at Christmas;
    2. Operational days not to exceed two hundred (200), and the school year not extending beyond June 30; and
    3. Adherence to provisions of all collective agreements.
  3. Individual school sites may recommend variations to the division school calendar. The Superintendent shall maintain an administrative procedure to address this matter. School-specific calendars which match the Board approved school division calendar, and follow administrative procedures shall be approved by the Superintendent.

Scope and Limitations of Superintendent:
The Superintendent role is outlined in this policy.

Information and Monitoring Requirements:
Each year in establishing the upcoming School Year Calendar a review will be provided by the Superintendent on problems encountered with the previous year’s calendar and implement mitigation strategies for the upcoming school year.
