Coaldale’s annual Bike Rodeo took place on May 27–28, 2025, welcoming approximately 750 students from Grades 2 to 5 at St. Joseph’s, John Davidson, Jennie Emery, and Sunnyside Schools. The event offered a hands-on, engaging way for young cyclists to learn vital bike safety skills.
Organized with leadership from Jessica Hoffman of Palliser School Division, the Bike Rodeo combined education and fun to promote safe riding habits among children.
Throughout the two-day event, students rotated through a series of interactive stations, spending 15–20 minutes at each. These stations focused on a variety of essential topics:
-
Brain Safety: A presentation by Brain Injury Relearning Services highlighted the importance of head protection, while Alberta Health Services provided personalized helmet fittings.
-
Bike Fitting: Students learned how to ensure their (imaginary) bikes were the correct size for safe and comfortable riding.
-
Street Safety Course: A practice road setup allowed students to simulate real-world cycling situations in a controlled environment.
-
Bike Maintenance: Although Alpenland Bike Maintenance's participation is pending, the plan included instruction on basic bike care and upkeep.
-
Emergency Services Tour: Coaldale District Emergency Services offered a tour of a fire truck, adding a fun and educational element to the day.
A major highlight of this year’s Rodeo was the donation of 200 helmets to students — a generous contribution that will help ensure more children in the Coaldale area have access to proper safety gear.
The Bike Rodeo continues to be a strong example of community collaboration, bringing together educators, emergency services, health professionals, and volunteers to support youth safety education.
