Last week, the halls of Coalhurst High School came alive with creativity as students shared their talents in the annual art showcase. The event featured a vibrant mix of visual art displays, theatre performances, concert band pieces, and rock band sets, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
On Thursday, the community was invited to experience the full lineup. The following morning, Coalhurst Elementary students were welcomed for a special showing, giving younger students a glimpse of the artistic opportunities that await them in high school. Beyond the entertainment, the showcase offered a meaningful way to bring people together, strengthening connections between the two schools and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
The showcase helps bridge the gap between elementary and high school, inviting younger students to connect with older peers and staff over shared interests. The elementary school choir even provided a pre-recorded song for the theatrical performance of "The Tragedy of the Big Bad Wolves", penned by teachers Nicole Swen and Melissa Moffat. These early connections encourage dialogue and build relationships that can ease future transitions and foster a sense of belonging.
Nicole, who helped organize the event, noted that the showcase reflects the student-driven spirit of Coalhurst High. Students are encouraged to explore and share their interests, while staff support and guide them in weaving these passions into school life. This collaborative approach helps create a welcoming and engaging learning environment where students and staff alike can grow and contribute. Case in point: one student suggested the band play 'Steve's Lava Chicken' from the Minecraft movie. Band Director Aaron Moffat obliged, so long as the student was able to create the arrangement, and much like
Events like the art showcase remind us of the power of working together. By celebrating the arts and creating spaces for connection, Coalhurst schools are helping to build a supportive, inclusive community where students feel at home and inspired to pursue their goals.
