Every school board has excellent first-year teachers, teachers who deserve to be recognized for their outstanding efforts by being nominated for the Alberta School Boards Association’s (ASBA) Edwin Parr Teacher Award. Chris Moraes is Palliser School Division’s nominee for the Edwin Parr Award. Being hired one week before school begins can be a challenge for any seasoned teacher, but for Chris as a first-year teacher, it was the beginning of what certainly is a tremendously successful year at Master's Academy and College. Master’s Academy principal, Linda Dyck describes Chris as enthusiastic, professional, and caring. “I see evidence of his excellent interpersonal skills on a daily basis both inside and outside of the classroom. He has built an easygoing rapport with students and connects very well with staff members and our school community,” said Mrs. Dyck. “He has become a vital part of my staff and school community and I am very happy to put forth this deserving individual for this award.”
Students and parents alike realize the difference the first-year teacher is making. "Grade 6 is an important, formative year for children. They need to leave elementary school feeling strong, confident, and with a passion for and a love of learning. Mr. Moraes is supporting this growth in my child. He has a special bond with his students, and this is a benefit to all,” wrote one grade six parent.
Established in 1964, The Edwin Parr Award is named after a long-time school board member from Athabasca, and a former president of the ASBA’s predecessor, the Alberta School Trustees’ Association.
The winner from Zone 6, which includes Palliser School Division, will be announced at a banquet on May 19, 2021. The six provincial winners will be acknowledged at the ASBA’s fall general meeting in November.
