High school students from Noble Central School earned three credits in their first few days of school in the great outdoors.
The students took part in an outdoor education course in Lethbridge's Indian Battle Park from Sept. 4-6.
Through a partnership with the Alberta Distance Learning Centre, staff from Inroads Mountain Sports Ltd taught the 50 students how to read a compass, tie knots, start fires with a flint, build an emergency lean-to, and read maps. On the final day, each of six groups were given co-ordinates to map out an area in detail. Students also learned how important it is to have a properly packed backpack. While experiencing extreme heat first hand, students and staff quickly learned the importance of being properly prepared for weather.
What a great way to start the year!
