Flags on Palliser schools and Central Office will fly at half staff through Wednesday in honour of former school board trustee Jean Mrak.

Mrak was first elected in 2004 and retired from the board in October 2013, after nine years of public service as trustee for Coaldale. She passed away Friday following a brief illness at age 63.

“All who worked with Jean will remember her ever-present smile, her gentle spirit and her sense of humour,” said Palliser Board Chair Colleen Deitz, in a message to all Palliser staff. “She led with her heart and she cared about all students. . .  We will miss her and we are grateful for her devotion to public education and Palliser.”

For many years, Mrak was the trustee representative for Brant Christian School, and she served on the board of the County of Lethbridge Community Learning Council. In addition to her work as a school board trustee, she ran a financial advisory business based in Coaldale.

She is survived by John, her husband of 42 years; their two sons, Brad and Joe; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church at 2114 18 St., Coaldale. Messages of condolence may be shared online through Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. Click here for more information.
