Event raises funds for young organ transplant recipients and an arts scholarship

Calgary Christian School will holds its second annual Marit Cup, a student-versus-staff hockey game to celebrate the legacy of a former student while raising money for the David Foster Foundation and a scholarship fund.

The game starts at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 19 at Markin MacPhail Arena, 88 Canada Olympic Road SW, Calgary.

Marit McKenzie graduated from Calgary Christian in 2012. She died suddenly in January 2013 from a pulmonary embolism. Part of her legacy is her organs were donated to others. In her Grade 12 year, McKenzie’s senior project was devoted to raising money for and awareness of the David Foster Foundation, which provides support for the non-medical expenses faced by families of children undergoing organ transplants.

Special guests this year will include hockey legend Lanny McDonald; Bruce and Susan McKenzie, Marit’s parents; Allison Jones, daughter of David Foster and foundation board member; Michael Ravenhill, the foundation’s chief executive officer; and Darren Loutit, a 10-year-old liver transplant recipient whose family received support from the foundation.

Last year’s hockey game raised about $15,000 which was split between the foundation and a new scholarship for a student in Palliser Regional Schools who is pursuing post-secondary studies in the arts, another of Marit’s passions.

Watching the on-ice action will be Calgary Christian students from Grades 4 through 12.

The game will be played during two halfs, with a number of half-time activities planned.
