A great educator can make a world of difference in a student’s life.
Albertans are encouraged to nominate an outstanding educator in their community for the 28th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards.
This year, about 30 semi-finalists will be selected and 20 winners will receive Excellence in Teaching Awards. Nominations will be open until Friday, March 4, 2016.
“We know that having quality teachers and principals is critical to student success. These awards are a great opportunity to recognize some of the great work that goes on every day in Alberta classrooms,” says Minister of Education David Eggen.
The award was initiated in 1989 by the Minister of Education to: recognize outstanding teachers; honour creativity and innovation; focus attention on the teaching profession; and involve Albertans in celebrating excellence.
Since its inception, more than 10,000 nominations have been submitted and more than 500 educators have received awards from the program.
Semi-finalists, who will be announced in April, receive certificates and access to $1,500 for professional learning. Award recipients will be honoured at a reception, dinner and awards presentation in May and will receive a certificate of recognition and access to $4,000 for professional learning award recipients.
Alberta Education presents the 28th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards with the support of the Alberta School Boards Association, the Alberta School Councils’ Association, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Association of Alberta Deans of Education and the College of Alberta School Superintendents.
